X. NEW INSTRUMENTS OF THOUGHT
Tables, abacus and spreadsheet
Electronic spreadsheets, as old as databases, process
numbers at great speed for all types of calculation. Over
the years they have been simplified, and have made fortunes
for their designers. Previously restricted to accountants
and economists, they are now widely available to all, and
even primary school students can make use of these
invaluable instruments, which also make it possible to
represent data graphically in various formats and colors.
Graphs and charts are essential elements in the display of
data, but until the appearance of spreadsheets and graphics
programs they had to be generated separately. Once again the
digital world brings things together rather than separating
them.
