X. NEW INSTRUMENTS OF THOUGHT
A friendly mouse
The mouse is an extension of our hand and our gaze at the
screen, enabling us to point out objects, press buttons,
select items, open and close files, set a video in motion,
all with the greatest of ease. It has been one of the most
notable inventions of the age. There are many kinds of mice
(with and without tails), some of which do not even require
hand movements as they work with the rolling of a track ball
or the tracing of a finger over a surface (track pad), to
move a pointer across the screen. The days before computers
had mice seem very long ago. But it all began only a little
more than a decade back, at Xerox and Apple in California,
and like another famous rodent, Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse,
this mouse also conquered the whole world.
