The golden link in communications: the modem
This essential element (modem: modulator/demodulator)
enables us to link digital and analog worlds over telephone
lines. There are many models of modem on the market and many
transmission speeds. The unit of measure of speed of
communication is the baud, named after Emile Baudot,
although for practical purposes the term bits per second or
bps is generally used. This book traveled over the net in
countless versions between the two authors using two modems
running at 28000 bps. In future telephone modems may perhaps
be replaced by faster cable-modem equipment which will
enable us to view digital video generated that very moment
thousands of kilometers away from our domestic computer,
with very high definition.
There are also radio modems much used by ham radio
operators. These can be of great use in connecting marginal
schools or schools far away from centers of population to
networks using electronic mail. The Cognitive Studies
Laboratory headed by Lea da Cruz Fagundes at the Rio Grande
do Sul Federal University in Porto Alegre, Brazil has
enabled some schools to connect to Internet by radio at no
cost.
