IV. THE EXTENDED SCHOOL
A definition of the extended school
Education is always provided within a community, so that
both educational and university establishments are in effect
open environments, and do not form closed enclaves. However,
it is one thing to open up to a small medieval community or
an industrial society in a country in the 19th Century, and
quite another to open up to the new post-industrial and
planetary society of the 21st Century. The educational
demands of the community vary in each era and the material
and educational resources will change accordingly.
The extended school can be considered as a living
organism supported on two feet, the educational
establishment (school) and the community of its students and
teachers (home). We will call the extended school this union
between school and home. The extended school has always
existed and will continue to do so, the novelty lies in the
fact that at present the new wave of expansion follows a
technological path of considerable complexity. A brief run
through the history of the extended school from a
technological point of view is provided below.
