V. NEW TOOLS AND OLD
The computer garden
We would like to share some successful experiences with
you regarding the abandoning of the rigid classroom format.
In the same way that the famous Media Lab of the M.I.T. has
its most powerful machines gathered together in a real
"computer garden", the doors to which are never closed, what
we propose is not a fantasy, but our practical experience at
the San Martín de Tours School. There all of the
pupils (and teachers) had unrestricted access to computers
from many different points. There were machines distributed
in many corners, patios and corridors. Some equipment is on
low tables, close to the floor, for the smaller children.
There are portable computers that can be borrowed from the
library as if they were just another book. The speed of
change in attitudes and behavior when such freedom was
provided within the school was remarkable. This freedom will
soon lead us to replace classrooms with functional spaces
and virtual walls. They will no longer be called classrooms
because knowledge no longer tolerates divisions or
frontiers.
